At the BAC Facilities meeting held Tuesday, December 6, District Department of Transportation staff introduced a proposed map of bike lanes to be added to the system in 2012.
The following map contains proposed bike infrastructure improvements / ideas that could be implemented within the District some time in calendar year 2012. The items in red are improvements proposed for 2011 but not completed. DDOT hopes to include those routes in 2012.
One of the proposed routes include L and M Streets between Pennsylvania Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue NW. While these lanes were planned for some time, the bike community voiced concern when Terry Bellamy said during his confirmation hearing as director of the DDOT that the dedicated lanes were "on hold" and at the risk of cancellation, as reported by Washington Examiner and other information outlets.
Also, you can overlay the current bike lanes on the map. Click the larger view of this map and then the traffic link at the upper right corner, then hit bicycling.
Just added: Some respondents have states that some currently stripped bike lanes have deteriorated and need to be repaint. BAC will add these streets to the map using the colortan green. (Some people stated that tan was more difficult to see when near freeways). Also, the map on this page does not contain all the possible additions. The larger map has a second page that shows additional bike improvements.

I would love to see the lanes on 14th NW, especially if they could connect to the lanes that start up north of Columbia. The hill on 14th can be a little dangerous for bikes, and a bike lane would be awesome.
ReplyDeleteAlso a big fan of the L and M lanes
The L and M lanes would be huge game changers, and would get a lot of people who work downtown more comfortable with commuting (in addition to providing that crucial cross-town link). Every time I hear them mentioned, I cross my fingers.
ReplyDeleteYes, cautiously optimistic about L&M. 11th st continuation would also be great to link up the north with downtown cross streets.
ReplyDeleteI think GGW wrote a piece about re-painting bike lines as being just as critical as putting in new ones. I think this is really evident along Kansas. They have the lanes, but the lines are barely visible and cars don't seem to pay much attention to them.
We've updated the map to include the repainting of lanes on Kansas Avenue from Varnum Street to Hamilton Street NW in the color tan. It appears that the area north of Hamilton was recently remarked.
ReplyDeleteJon, minor problem with the map on 14th street NW. The proposed lanes are from Florida Avenue to Columbia Road and do not end at Euclid.
ReplyDeleteOh, fantastic. Those lanes will get a ton of use. Thanks for clarifying.
ReplyDeleteHow about actually connecting the proposed 14th Street lanes between Florida and Harvard all the way south to U Street where there are existing lanes? It seems silly not to have bike lanes on the 4 blocks between Florida and U Street, where there is the most traffic.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it would be great if we could get the 15th Street cycle track extended farther north. The section along Meridian Hill Park is just begging for it as there are two north-bound lanes on both sides of car traffic!
Eric, we've added your suggestions. Please refresh the map.
ReplyDeleteOn the interim Metropolitan Branch Trail, can a contraflow lane be constructed on one-way Gallatin? Going against the one-way on a bike, even with signs, is kinda hairy.
ReplyDeleteDan W. I live on Gallatin NE so I know the area well.
ReplyDeleteFrom what we were told, the Gallatin Street bike lane would be one way in the direction westerly direction to New Hampshire. Hamilton Street would contain a lane traveling in the easterly direction from New Hampshire to Fort Totten Drive NE. This is shown on the 'larger map" in Google maps.
But more to your point, it may be more effective to have a contraflow lane on Gallatin Street because there is no stop light on Hamilton Street as it crosses North Capitol making it difficult to cross.
Great list. I'm excited about Rock Creek Church Road NW and Illinois Ave. It will help connect NW and NE and helps build the connection to MBT. Will also provide a much needed road diet for both of these stretches.
ReplyDeleteThere is plenty of room to paint a bike line on South Capital St, south of the Anacostia. A cycletrack would be more appropriate, but a bike lane would be a big improvement in this "bicycle desert" area of town.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for those lanes on L&M!
ReplyDeleteJ. Krall, your suggestion has been added although part of it was in plan as reported in the washcycle.

Thanks for prioritizing the 11th St NW lane extension south of Florida. Question: on this map, 15th up the slope is tan -- does this mean that it's getting restriped? I, like Erik W, think that it would be great (and only natural) to create a contraflow lane south of Euclid, feeding into the contraflow cycletrack.
ReplyDeleteI know that the 15th St cycletrack is being "studied" before other cycletracks get built, but it could be even more of a success if it tied into the bike lane network a bit better. The long block between Pennsylvania and Constitution (and the Mall) and the confusion at Vermont & Madison Place NW (by Lafayette Park) keep it from being a truly finished facility.
Not a single one in Ward 6... I guess you can tell Tommy Wells doesn't chair the Transportation Committee any more. I'd suggest K St NE, G St NE, and Maryland Ave NE all as good options. H Street is not good for biking, so it would be a big improvement to have some bikelanes or sharrows on neighboring streets.
ReplyDeleteWestnorth.com and Anonymous, we have added your suggestions.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see more cycle tracks like 15th St. separated from vehicular traffic. I routinely ride 14th St. in both directions and find parked cars in lanes routinely. I'm also a little leery of car doors opening into bike lanes, a hazard that could be reduced if we had more separate bike lanes.
ReplyDeleteFor a long-term vision, I'd like to see a comprehensive system of cycle tracks that would allow cyclists to navigate much of the city without directly competing with vehicles in the same lanes. This is what it will take to get more people out of cars, buses, and trains, and onto bikes. Most people are too afraid to ride in traffic, and in fact, it's not always safe.
I agree that L and M are absolutely essential. Non-rush hour cycling is challenging, and rush hour is almost impossible.
I would love to see a 2-way separated bike lane (using the structure in place on 15th St) on Connecticut Ave. between the intersection with Calvert Street and the DC border. This would connect the Calvert bike lane with the vast residential areas on CT Ave. (The Calvert bike lane connects to other lanes and, combined with 15th St., is a good conduit to downtown). Cyclists already make heavy use of this section of Connecticut Ave., but they have to ride in traffic which is dangerous due to the high traffic speeds and many trucks on the road. A bike lane would improve safety for bicyclists and encourage cycling with minimal disruption for cars, as CT Ave. is not overloaded with traffic, so the loss of one lane would not be catastrophic. Additionally, there are no parking meters on most of this section of CT Ave., so the city would not lose revenue. And there is already biking infrastructure in place in the area: Capital Bikeshare stations, as well as bike racks at the Metro stations. Hopefully a bike lane can be a reality someday!
ReplyDeleteIn response to anonymous post of April 13, 2012 at 9:18pm. I'm assuming that CT is Connecticut Avenue. Your coment about it not being overloaded with traffic and the lose of one lane would not be catastrophic - you are so WRONG. Traffic on Connecticut Avenue from downtown to outside the beltway is aways heavy except early early morning and late nights.
DeletePLEASE DO NOT remove a lane from Connecticut Avenue.
Great news! I work in the downtown and it will be times easier for me to get there by my bicycle! Thanks for sharing the information and a map.
